Wireline seals are precision elastomeric and polymeric components used in wireline pressure control equipment (PCE) to maintain wellbore integrity during logging, perforating, and intervention operations. These seals—primarily in grease injectors, packoffs, and stuffing boxes—contain well pressure (up to 15,000 psi) while allowing smooth passage of slickline, braided line, or e-line (0.092″–0.5″ dia) at speeds up to 600 ft/min.
Why Critical? Seal failure risks blowouts, H2S release, or tool loss in live wells, especially in HPHT and sour environments. Effective sealing prevents fluid migration, protects cable, and ensures operational safety during multi-run campaigns.
Key Types & Features:
Flow Tube Seals (Grease Seals): Dual/triple V-packs in grease injection heads; hydraulic grease pressure (1.2–1.5x well pressure) forms dynamic barrier. Anti-extrusion mesh prevents blowout.
Packoff Rubbers: Molded elements in hydraulic packoffs; compress via piston to seal on stationary cable.
Stuffing Box Seals: Spring-loaded for surface control; low-friction for slickline.
Features: Quick-change cartridges, RGD resistance, abrasion-resistant compounds, NACE MR0175 compliance.
Testing & Standards: Qualified per API 6A Annex F, NORSOK M-710 for RGD (10 cycles, 150 bar, 150°C), and field-simulated cable wear tests. Leak rate <0.01 cc/min under dynamic conditions.Applications & Benefits: In lubricators, BOPs, and tool traps for cased-hole logging, plug setting, and perforating. Benefits: Extended run life, reduced grease consumption, safe operations in offshore and high-H2S wells.
